by Rachel Fischer

Welcome to your guide to tinned fish! Not only is tinned fish delicious and full of nutrients, it’s also incredibly versatile. Whether you’re tossing a tin in your homemade pasta, a savory dip, or a tasty snack, you won’t be disappointed with these flavor-packed tins. So, in case you weren’t aware of how handy these little cans are, I’m going to tell you my favorite ways to enjoy a variety of tinned fish. Let’s dive in!

Tinned Fish in Cooking

Tinned fish is a true culinary chameleon! Tuna, sardines, and mackerel add a rich and savory depth to your pasta sauce. Or, keep it simple and grab a can of Ati Manel’s Sardines in spiced olive oil and toss it in with some pasta for an easy dinner! You can get creative and add lemon, chili crisp, capers, Parmigiano Reggiano, or fresh herbs like basil or parsley. So simple, yet so delicious!

Tinned fish also make some incredible dips. Get yourself a can of Alalunga Albacore Tuna or Jose Gourmet’s Smoked Salmon, and toss in a bowl with some cream cheese, lime juice, black pepper, and chopped garlic. You can add some hot sauce or red pepper flakes to incorporate some heat. Top with fresh dill and serve with vegetables or Potter’s crackers.

There are SO many ways to enjoy tinned finish, I guarantee you’ll be hooked once you try.

Pairing Tinned Fish

Have you ever heard of a tinned fish board? If not, you’re in for a treat. Just like with cheeses and meats, you can use tinned fish to make your own charcuterie-style board. This is perfect for date nights, friendly get-togethers, or just a fun dinner for one. Let’s go over some flavor pairings!

Oysters have a buttery and briny taste to them that pairs well with the umami flavor in mushrooms. A tin of Enoke’s Lemon Pepper Smoked Oysters alongside sautéed or marinated mushrooms are a perfect addition to a fish board.

Anchovies have a salty and fishy flavor profile that goes great with green olives and smoky, rich cheese. Try adding Espinaler Anchovy-Stuffed Olives to your board in combination with Smoked Marieke gouda or a sweet cheddar. Add some pistachios and you’ve got a match made in heaven.

Another great tinned fish to pair is herring. Because of its smoky and highly savory taste, herring is best accompanied with tangy and acidic flavors. Try grabbing some cornichons or pickled red onion and a can of Wildfish Cannery Smoked Herring. Beets are another fun and colorful addition to your board that pairs beautifully with the smoked herring.

No matter which fish you choose, there are some vegetables that go well with virtually any tinned fish. Thinly sliced cucumber, tomato, or radish to your board can add a fresh and crunchy element to your board! Feel free to get creative and experiment, you might be surprised by how many different flavors compliment these little tins. Don’t forget to serve some fresh baguette or salted crackers on the side.

Now you’re on your way to crafting the perfect tinned fish board. Have fun with it and reel in the flavor!
